Candidate instructions
Setting: Emergency Department. You are a foundation doctor. A 24-year-old male footballer has been brought in after a twisting injury to his right knee yesterday. He has a swollen knee and pain. You have been asked to examine the knee. You do NOT need to take a history. Perform a focused physical examination of his right knee. Explain what you are doing as you go. You have 10 minutes.
How the station runs
- 60 seconds of reading time with the instructions above, and nothing else.
- 10 minutes on the clock, with a warning bell before the end.
- The examiner's checklist, 13 weighted items worth 21.5 marks, revealed only when the station ends.
- Your score, with a critical-fail flag if a safety-critical item was missed.
The checklist stays hidden until the station is over, exactly as it would outside the exam room.
