Candidate instructions

You are a final-year medical student in an outpatient neurology clinic. Mr. Smith is a 60-year-old man who presents with a two-week history of right foot drop. You have 10 minutes to perform a focused neurological examination of his lower limbs. Explain the examination to the patient, gain consent, and undertake a systematic assessment. Do not take a history. You will be observed by an examiner who has a checklist. Begin when you are ready.

How the station runs

  1. 60 seconds of reading time with the instructions above, and nothing else.
  2. 10 minutes on the clock, with a warning bell before the end.
  3. The examiner's checklist, 12 weighted items worth 24 marks, revealed only when the station ends.
  4. Your score, with a critical-fail flag if a safety-critical item was missed.

The checklist stays hidden until the station is over, exactly as it would outside the exam room.
